THERMARMOUR (part of Interweave Healthcare) Showcases Passive Warming Solution for Pre-Warming
Maintaining a patient's body temperature before, during, and after surgery is essential to prevent perioperative hypothermia and the associated post operative complications such as a higher risk of surgical site infections.
Despite growing clinical evidence supporting the importance of temperature management (some studies show that pre-warming can reduce SSIs by up to 40%), inconsistencies in pre-warming practices mean that roughly 20% of patients arrive cold to the operating theatre, leading to surgery delays and a heightened risk of post operative complications.
Interweave Healthcare is addressing this critical issue with its THERMARMOUR passive warming blankets, designed to maintain normothermia throughout the patient pathway. At the Anaesthesia & Critical Care conference, Interweave Healthcare looks forward to showcasing THERMARMOUR, a cost-effective, energy-efficient solution to patient warming.
THERMARMOUR Blankets Ensure Consistent Patient Warmth Pre-Op to Recovery, Offering a Cost-Effective, Energy-Efficient Alternative to Traditional Warming Methods
25.09.24 – Interweave Healthcare, a leader in innovative medical textiles, is excited to announce its participation in the Anaesthesia & Critical Care conference 2024, where it will showcase its THERMARMOUR passive warming blankets. This product is designed to address the critical issue of maintaining patient warmth before, during, and after surgery, as emphasised in the NICE guidelines (2013), helping prevent perioperative hypothermia and the associated post-operative complications such as infections.
Maintaining a patient’s body temperature is crucial for positive outcomes, and pre-warming has been shown to reduce the incidence of surgical site infections by up to 40%. However, roughly 20% of patients still arrive at the operating theatre cold due to inconsistent pre-warming practices. This can delay surgeries and contribute to poor outcomes post surgery.
While forced air warming (FAW) and conductive warming devices are common practice, they are often introduced to the patient pathway intraoperatively, whilst pre and post operative warming is neglected. NICE guidelines indicate that all elective surgery patients should be pre-warmed for 30mins prior to anaesthesia but due to the operational complexity of using FAW for pre-warming, this solution is typically only used for pre-warming in extreme cases when patients are highlighted as vulnerable.
THERMARMOUR: A Game-Changer in Patient Warming
THERMARMOUR passive warming blankets offer a clinically proven solution that can be used to pre-warm every patient. The blanket's unique multi-layered design captures the body’s own heat, creating an immediate thermal envelope without the need for external energy sources. The blankets are X-ray compatible and can be adapted to fit surgical scenarios if used intraoperatively.
“Unlike forced air and conductive warming products, THERMARMOUR can be used for every elective surgery patient, ensuring they arrive at surgery warm, thus preventing costly delays and reducing energy consumption,” said Charles Benson, Interweave Healthcare's MD. “With healthcare budgets tighter than ever and sustainability increasingly critical, THERMARMOUR offers a cost-effective, energy-efficient solution.”
Clinical Validation and Hospital Adoption
Extensive clinical validation shows that THERMARMOUR effectively maintains normothermia for up to four hours during surgery. Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) conducted a service evaluation in spine surgery, demonstrating that "the use of a THERMARMOUR warming blanket can achieve a high degree of compliance with the WHO standard for temperature management."
Hospitals like Northumbria Healthcare, RJAH, and Harrogate District Hospital are already utilising THERMARMOUR across the patient pathway, from pre-warming to recovery.
As a more affordable alternative to FAW and conductive warming devices, THERMARMOUR aligns with healthcare facilities’ growing need to balance performance, cost-efficiency, and sustainability.
