Medication review to reduce falls in older adults

Falls are a major healthcare challenge worldwide accounting for 14% of all emergency department presentations and 17 million disability adjusted life years worldwide. It causes morbidity and mortality and is expensive accounting for 0.85-1.5% of total healthcare expenditure in the US, Europe and Australia. This talk aims to set the scene for falls and polypharmacy, introduce the world falls guidelines for prevention and management in relation to medicines management and introduce FRIDS (falls risk inducing drugs). I will then cover what we should be doing as clinicians before prescribing FRIDS and introduce deprescribing; what it is, reasons for deprescribing, how to go about it, deprescribing tools and barriers to deprescribing. The talk will touch on deprescribing psychiatric medicines and finally cover discontinuation syndromes to watch out for.
