Medical training contributes very little to our understanding of why patients develop non-cardiac chest pain, Irritable bowel syndrome, non-epileptic seizures, fibromyalgia and the like. Consequently we struggle to make clear diagnoses, and have little advice to give patients. There is an increasing understanding of the neurophysiology and psychology behind these conditions. This talk aims to present the limited evidence we have and suggest an approach to helping patients.
