Due to the number of significant respiratory impairments associated with obesity, we aim to minimise opioid use peri-operatively in bariatric patients. A service evaluation was conducted in our district general hospital to evaluate current practice in the use of analgesia and opioids in bariatric surgery. A prospective evaluation over six months included data collection on analgesia used, post-operative opioid requirements and post-operative pain scores. The results have allowed us to work towards a local guideline for analgesia in bariatric surgery.
